Microsoft’s free upgrade offer for Windows 10 ended some years ago, except no one told the people who run the Windows activation servers. While the free update offer for the general public has closed, the software giant allows a loophole with this extension that lets users upgrade to Windows 10. You can upgrade a PC with a genuine Windows 7 or 8.1 license to Windows 10.

Why should Windows 7 users upgrade to Windows 10?

Well, support for Windows 7 officially ended in January 2020. This means that Microsoft no longer offers security updates or fixes, technical assistance, or software updates to your computer. Though your computer will still work, you’re at risk of exposing your system to malware and virus attacks.

Ending the support for Windows 7 didn’t surprise many Windows users as Microsoft promised 10 years of product support for each version of its OS. Windows 7 was released in October 2009, do the math (extended support for Windows 8.1 will end in January 2023).

Benefits of Windows 10

1. A better browser

Say goodbye to the sometimes frustrating Internet Explorer and say hello to the swift and improved Microsoft Edge. The modernized OS’s default browser comes with new features such as webpage markup, on-page text lookup with Cortana, reading mode, and improved specs like compatibility and speed.

2. Security

Microsoft cracked down hard on their security with Windows 10, which features an improved version of the Windows 8 Secure Boot feature. This feature ensures whatever code is run right as the OS starts is signed by Microsoft or the hardware maker.

In addition, Microsoft added Device Guard, Windows Hello, and Microsoft Passport to increase the security level of Windows 10.

3. Top-notch screenshot tool

You can now select an area of your screen to screenshot by tapping the Windows key + Shift + S. With this feature, you don’t need a third-party app to make screenshots. You can even make basic edits and markup to the snapped screenshot. You can also save or share the result.

4. Typing with your voice

We are aware of the text to speech feature on some devices, but Windows 10 goes further with the reverse option. Converting your voice to texts is a brilliant feature that Windows 10 has.

The best part? It’s effortless to use and requires zero complicated setups. Simply press the Windows key + H, start speaking and have your computer start typing what you say.

5. Cortana

Virtual assistants like Siri have proved to be an incredibly advantageous asset to users. It even gets better when you’re able to interact with your technology hands-free. You don’t have to go through the hassle of punching in a combination of keys or remembering the combination.

A simple, “Hey Cortana insert action here” will get your computer doing as it is told. And it doesn’t stop there. You can shut down your computer using Cortana and get more specific reminders that’ll show up on any Cortana device.

6. A touch screen option for hybrid devices

With a hybrid device such as the Microsoft Surface tablet, Windows 10 activates an exclusive touch-view when the user uses the touch screen. This feature makes switching between laptop and tablet mode seamless and easy.

Some people, however, complain about the fingerprints left behind, but most of our phones use a touch screen, and we find ways to deal with the fingerprints.

That said, that doesn’t mean your keyboards don’t get dirty. In fact, as keyboards are frequently touched and hardly cleaned, it makes sense that research by Dr. Charles Gerba lists keyboards as part of the top 5 dirtiest things in the office.

Dirty keyboards can lead to many problems, from stiff and sticky keys to overheating and slowing down your system. To avoid things like that, you should clean your keyboard frequently and the right way too.

7. Speed

Windows 10 boasts of a lighter and faster OS compared to its predecessors. The upgraded OS is fitted with a faster start-up time, shorter time to load applications, and improved battery consumption. Because the OS is more efficient, it demands less processing power from the hardware.

8. A sophisticated game bar

This feature is for gamers. A game bar is a tool that allows you to take screenshots, make screen videos, control audio panels, and also broadcast your gaming session, all without having to leave your game’s interface.

It also features separate panels for various functions, such as one for performance specs, chatting with other gamers, and more. Press the Windows key + G to access it, but make sure it’s active first. Got to “Settings,” then “Gaming,” then “Game bar,” activate it.
